Senior Transportation

If you’ve just passed 50, getting around might not be much of a concern to you yet, but those seniors just a few decades ahead of you are increasingly facing challenges in finding transportation.

Whether it’s for heading to a family members house for the holidays or simply to get across town to the doctor or grocery store, there is a need for transportation from seniors who are no longer able to operate a vehicle on their own. This is a growing concern in America, and for that reason many co-operative and non-profit businesses offer locally based transportation networks to assist those who can’t drive themselves.

Due to the nature of the senior transportation problem, most help is available on a local level and varies from town to town. One organization making a difference is the National Center on Senior Transportation (NCST). The mission of NCST is to increase the transportation options for seniors and to improve senior living through increased independence and mobility.  Their website lists several resources related to transportation including safe driving programs, policy issues, and even directories of transportation services and providers.

Another group trying to help seniors get around town is the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, who’s website provides a link to the Eldercare Locator, which can be used by seniors to find the help they need in their area.
